Hull Construction
The project was started by laying out the top side profile of the Interdictor
on .040 sheet styrene. I used the Star Destroyer from AMT/Ertl to create the
wedge shape and overall dimensions. The kit is not accurate to the studio
model however it will work fine to gauge this build. According to the story
the Interdictor was built on the same hull and shares much of the same substructure.
The following two views show the overall profile of the top side panels. The
Evergreen Sheet styrene is 2" to short for the total length of the Interdictor
so the points are separate pieces that will be grafted on later.
The top side detail is traced out onto the styrene wedges. Here you can see
the neck, trench, upper surface decks, and gravity well projector locations.
The trench will be 1/2" at the front of the neck and taper to 1/4"
at the front of the ship with an over all length of 9 1/4". The upper
deck will spread out from the trench sides. Fore to aft the interdictor measures
15" and from port to starboard 7 3/4".
..
At this
point the trench has been cut out and the upper gravity well projectors test
fit in the locations marked. I found the 8
1 1/2" acrylic sphere halves at Tap Plastic that worked perfectly the
other option was to vacuum form them over the bottom half of a hollow Easter
egg I robbed from the holiday box. The neck was constructed at the same time
as the control decks to get the overhang needed. This section measures 4"
wide by 2 3/4" long.
II used a circle template to find the height of the front and back walls of
the upper decks. In the center two pics is a test this on the upper hull and
the final upper deck layout. To the right is the break down of the materials
used.
