B-WING FIGHTER

RETURN OF THE JEDI

studio model
SCRATCH BUILT
IN

APPROXIMATELY STUDIO SCALE

I was sitting at the computer when the B-Wing fighter from MPC I had built some time ago caught my eye. I have always been disappointed with the small size of the kit. With the MPC kit being the only one available and the SMT (Scale Model Technologies) 1:48th scale out of production I decided it was time to build my favorite Star Wars fighter.

This was not to be in scale with the rest of my Star Wars kits but rather a larger scale scratch build. I was after a studio scale project for some time and this was it. The only reference to the size of the filming miniature is somewhere around 18 inches in length. I found a schematic in one of my old magazines that was right on the money with those dimensions so that set the size.

Next up was to gather any and all photos I could find of the studio model. Although there are not a lot out there Starship Modelers web site became the best source. They have several great shots of it at the Smithsonian exhibit. Ironically the MPC kit has really good detail overall so I used it to figure out some areas that I could not find pictures of.

With the tools and references I felt I needed in hand the project was underway.
